Sustainable Screw Piles | Loch Leven National Nature Reserve

Overview

Protecting the natural landscape with a sustainable screw piles foundation

The viewing screen is situated on the Northwest shore on the banks of Loch Leven National Nature Reserve. An environmentally friendly foundation solution was critical given the sensitive location of the project, within 3 metres of the waters edge, to ensure minimum impact on the existing landscape. Access was also limited along a stretch of the heritage trail and the least amount of disturbance to wildlife was a crucial consideration.

Solution

Supply and installation of strong and sustainable ground screw foundations with minimum environmental impact

Following close coordination with NatureScot, G.A. Davidson Contractors who was responsible for the manufacture and installation of the Viewing Screen and ICOSIS Architects we agreed on the foundation requirements.

With minimum disruption to the surrounding landscape and sustainability in mind, we installed 12 no. RADIX Extendable Screw Piles to approximately 3.5m deep, providing a piled foundation to secure the bespoke structure and raised access ramp to.

Installation was completed within a day using our 7000Nm hydraulic auger attachment on one of our small excavators.
